The president of the Fulbright Alumni Association of Cameroon, Professor Emmanuel Matateyou, wishes to inform members that an important exco meeting has been scheduled to take place on January 13, 2010. During this meeting discussions will focus on the “Fulbright Week” that is planned for April 2010.

Minutes of the exco meeting held on January 05, 2010

The meeting started at about 2: 20 pm with a welcome statement from the president. He thanked the Almighty God for having kept everybody in good health and for having made it possible for members to turn up for the meeting. He went further, after his welcome statement, and asked members to make announcements or report any news concerning Fulbright members. In this light, it was announced that Professor Mrs Martha Ayuk was currently in the US for a brief stay. It was also announced that Dr Ngefac has been awarded the Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) fellowship for experienced researchers and that Professor Tamanji recently attended a conference in Germany under the sponsorship of AvH.

After the announcements, there was an evaluation on the progress made so far by the new exco. The following realizations were mentioned:

1- The new exco were able to address a letter of congratulation to President Barack Obama via the Ambassador of the US in Yaounde on his election as the first African American president of the United States.

2- A letter was also sent to the former FAAC president, Professor Edward Ako, to request for the association’s documents. The president regretted the fact that so far the reply of that letter has not yet been received. It was then decided that another letter should be addressed to him to explain how the association desperately needs the documents and his assistance to be able to pursue its roadmap. It was also decided that a copy of the letter should be sent to the Embassy.

3- The fact that a website has also been created for the association was also mentioned. The president however pointed out that the host of the site is threatening to close it down if the maintenance cost is not paid. The vice president, Prof. Tamanji, suggested that the president should appeal to Serge (the contact person for the website) to go ahead and pay the money needed to maintain the site and the association will reimburse him within a period of six months.

As concerns the plan of action for the future, an exco meeting was scheduled to take place on January 13, 2010. During this date, the exco will discuss and evaluate activities that will mark the Fulbright week and the Fulbright Day. This day will certainly be April 5, 2010, given that William Fulbright was born on April 5. The activities earmarked include the following:

· Roundtable discussion on an appraisal of the democratic process in Cameroon.

· Seminars to disseminate information to potential applicants in different towns in Cameroon.

· Talks from American Fulbrighters studying or researching in Cameroon on “Fulbright alumni and international cooperation” with a particular focus on how potential Fulbright applicants can be linked to US scholars.

The different exco members present at the meeting were assigned different tasks and they were expected to present the results during the next exco meeting. Professor Tamanji would be in charge of the Fulbright Day; Dr Ngefac would focus on FAAC seminars and the dissemination of information to potential applicants and Professor Kishani would be concerned with the Fulbright alumni and international cooperation. An evaluation of the different activities involved in each of the programs, the human resources needed and the cost are expected from each of the exco members assigned the tasks.

The meeting finally ended at around 3:30 pm with a closing remark from the president. He thanked all those who managed to be present at the meeting and wished everybody a safe return to his or her destination. He ended by inviting all those present to a “buffet” at the “Le Normalien Restaurant” opposite the ENS campus.

PREPARING A SUCCESSFUL FULBRIGHT SENIOR SCHOLAR APPLICATION

INTRODUCTION: MISSION

The mission of the Fulbright Scholar Program is

? To increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and people of other nations.

? To provide educational exchange experiences to a maximum number of people not previously afforded such opportunity

ELIGIBILITY: The Fulbright Senior Scholar Program (FSSP) targets:

? Holders of PhD Degree or equivalent professional

certificate or experience;

? University teachers;

STAGE 1: PLANNING AHEAD

? You need one year from the day you decide to apply for

FSSP to prepare the application;

? Necessity for US (university or research institution) affiliation;

? Consult with current FB participants, FB ALUMNI and the FB organization representatives in Yaounde.

STAGE 2: GUIDELINES FOR APPLICATION

PLEASE NOTE: Read the instructions for completing the application form before completing the 29 items on the four-page form.

? Submit the following documents i) application form; ii) detailed project proposal; iii) detailed curriculum vitae; iv) three references; v) invitation letter if available.

? Complete all items in English;

? Application form must be typed or computer-generated;

? Responses to preceding questions must fit within spaces provided. Attached additional pages are unacceptable;

? Users of electronic version of form must not change format, pagination, font or type size.

? Submit an error free application after proofreading

? You must present application as a whole unit.

STAGE 3: THE PROJECT STATEMENT, FACTORS TO ADDRESS

PLEASE NOTE ? Treat project statement as a single most important factor of FSS application

? Must be ?theoretically sound? well-written, compelling and feasible;

? Make an impression on the reviewer by emphasising key points in the first paragraph of the research proposal;

? Type at the top of the first page of the proposal your name, country and project title. On subsequent pages, type name and country only;

? Introduce and situate research topic within academic and professional contexts (background);

? Clearly define your study objectives

? Describe research project in 3-5 single-spaced typed pages (3,500 words), addressing the following factors:

? type of research

? strategy

? methods and plan

? Include bibliographic attachment of about three pages (2,100 words);

? Ensure reviewers from other fields can identify key points you wish to put across in the project statement;

? Explain significance of project for the field, home country and personal professional development;

? Explain your evaluation plans and how research results will be disseminated at home and USA;

? Discuss how and why residence in US, and duration requested are necessary for project accomplishment;

? Describe your education in English and listening, speaking, reading and writing competence.

SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE (LECTURING PROPOSAL)

? Describe courses taught, methods employed, thesis supervision among other responsibilities;

? State relevance of experience to US lecturing;

? Explain education in English and your listening, speaking, reading and listening competence;

? Outline how opportunity of educational exchange experience in US will impact your professional activities in home countries.

STAGE 4: CURRICULUM VITAE

NOTE: Describe your academic credential and academic achievements including the following:

? University education, degree obtained and dates;

? Actual position held;

? Courses taught, other professional services;

? List of publications

? Involvement in other professional activities;

? Membership and involvement in professional associations;

? Professional honours, awards, fellowships;

? Community service

STAGE 5: THREE REFERENCE REPORTS AND LETTERS

? Submit three reference letters from colleagues in your field, one of which must be outside your home institution;

? Copies of your project statement should be made available to the referees;

? Letters of recommendation should be submitted along with the application;

? Reference letters should be written in English and attached to reference report forms;

? You must ensure reference letters are submitted before the stipulated deadline.

CONCLUDING STATEMENT

Clear and succinct expression and methodology will enhance the quality of the FSS application
